From Freeform to Structured: The Lyric Writer
You’ve brainstormed with Song Buddy and refined your concept. Now it’s time to build the actual song. This is where Lyric Writer takes over—Songyn’s structured composition tool that transforms ideas into complete, performance-ready lyrics.
Unlike Song Buddy’s conversational approach, Lyric Writer operates on a visual, drag-and-drop interface that lets you architect your song’s structure before a single word is generated.
Understanding the Lyric Writer Interface
The Lyric Writer is divided into three main panels:
Left Panel: Structure Builder
This is where you visually construct your song’s architecture using draggable section blocks. Think of it as Lego blocks for songwriting.
Center Panel: Live Preview
As you add sections and generate lyrics, this panel shows your complete song in real-time. You can edit directly here.
Right Panel: Generation Controls
Here you’ll find the Generate button, Model Selection (covered in Lesson 2.3), and Granular Control sliders (covered in Lesson 2.4).
The Structure Builder: Drag-and-Drop Song Architecture
The Structure Builder is Songyn’s answer to the songwriter’s eternal question: “How should I organize this song?”
Default Section Types
When you open Lyric Writer, you’ll see a palette of pre-made section blocks:
Verse
The storytelling foundation. Most songs have 2-3 verses that develop the narrative.
Chorus
The emotional and melodic hook. This section repeats throughout the song.
Pre-Chorus
Optional transition that builds tension between verse and chorus.
Bridge
A contrasting section (usually appears once) that offers new perspective or emotional shift.
Intro
Sets the mood before the first verse (can be instrumental cues or opening lines).
Outro
Concludes the song (can be a final chorus variation or fadeout).
Custom Section Types
Genre-specific or experimental songs often need sections beyond the defaults. Songyn lets you create custom sections for:
Guitar Solo (Rock/Blues)
Instrumental break where lyrics might describe the vibe (“Let it scream” or “[Instrumental]”).
Drop (EDM/Trap)
Bass-heavy section with minimal or chanted lyrics.
Interlude (R&B/Neo-Soul)
Soft spoken-word or atmospheric section between main parts.
Ad-Lib Section (Hip-Hop)
Space for improvisational vocal fills.
Hook (Distinct from Chorus)
In hip-hop, a repetitive melodic phrase separate from the main chorus.
Building Your First Structure: The 3-Minute Pop Formula
Let’s build a standard pop song structure that works for most genres:
Step 1: Drag Sections into Timeline
- Drag Intro from the section palette to the timeline
- Add Verse 1
- Add Chorus
- Add Verse 2
- Add Chorus (again)
- Add Bridge
- Add Chorus (final)
Your timeline now shows: Intro → V1 → C → V2 → C → B → C
This is the classic ABABCB structure used in thousands of hit songs.
Step 2: Set Section-Specific Instructions
Click on any section block to open its detail panel. Here you can:
- Set line count (e.g., “Verse should be 8 lines”)
- Add section-specific prompts (e.g., “This verse should introduce the protagonist”)
- Lock certain lines (if you’ve already written a great opening line manually)
Example: Customizing Verse 1
Click Verse 1 → Set line count to 8 → Add prompt: “Describe waking up alone after a breakup, focus on small details like empty coffee cups.”
The AI will use this guidance when generating that specific section.
Step 3: Reorder Sections for Experimental Structures
Not every song follows ABABCB. You can drag sections to reorder:
Standard Pop: Intro-V-C-V-C-B-C
Hip-Hop: Intro-Hook-V1-Hook-V2-Hook-Bridge-Hook
Indie Experimental: V1-V2-C-V3-Outro (delayed chorus for tension)
Songyn’s Structure Builder adapts to any configuration.
Section Count Recommendations by Genre
Pop / Top 40
- Verses: 2-3 (8-12 lines each)
- Chorus: Repeats 3-4 times (4-8 lines)
- Bridge: 1 (4-8 lines)
- Total Duration: 2:30 – 3:30
Hip-Hop / Rap
- Verses: 2-3 (16-32 bars each = long verses)
- Hook: Repeats 3-4 times (4-8 lines, melodic)
- Bridge/Outro: Optional
- Total Duration: 3:00 – 4:00
Rock / Alternative
- Verses: 2-3 (variable length)
- Chorus: 3-4 repeats (often anthemic)
- Guitar Solo: 1 (replaces a verse or bridge)
- Total Duration: 3:00 – 4:30
R&B / Neo-Soul
- Verses: 2-3 (smooth, conversational)
- Chorus: 2-3 repeats (often shorter, repetitive)
- Bridge: 1 (emotional climax)
- Interlude: Optional (spoken-word or instrumental)
- Total Duration: 3:00 – 5:00
Preview Mode: See Before You Generate
Before hitting Generate, click Preview Structure at the top of the Structure Builder.
This shows:
- Total song length estimate (based on average line reading speed)
- Section flow diagram
- Potential pacing issues (e.g., “Warning: 3 verses in a row may cause listener fatigue”)
Why This Matters:
Each generation costs Songyn credits. Previewing lets you catch structural issues before spending credits on flawed architecture.
Advanced: Conditional Sections
For album projects in Album Mode, you can set conditional sections:
Example:
“If this is Track 1 of the album, include a 30-second Intro to set the tone. If it’s Track 5+, skip intro and start with Verse 1.”
This keeps your album from sounding repetitive (every track doesn’t need a slow intro).
Practical Exercise: Build a Structured Song
Step 1: Open Lyric Writer
Navigate to your project and click Lyric Writer.
Step 2: Choose a Template or Start Blank
Songyn offers templates (“3-Minute Pop,” “Trap Banger,” “Indie Ballad”) or you can start with a blank timeline.
Step 3: Build Your Structure
Drag sections to create: Intro → Verse 1 → Chorus → Verse 2 → Chorus → Bridge → Chorus.
Step 4: Customize Verse 1
Click Verse 1, set 8 lines, add prompt: “Opening scene of the story—where is the character physically and emotionally?”
Step 5: Preview
Click Preview Structure. Check estimated song length. Adjust if needed.
Step 6: Save Structure
Click Save Structure as Template. Name it “My Go-To Pop Structure.” You can reuse this for future songs.
